Summary

Public Library staff workshops for NASA @ My Library STEM Training

Description

Laurie Bone from Longway Planetarium’s Education and Outreach Department will provide a one-day hands-on STEM training for public library staff that will cover the following content:

• Overview of relevant astronomy terms and concepts

• Strategies for effective deliver of STEM based activities for kids of all ages (pre-school – teen)

• Ideas for Astronomy activities that librarians can use while developing their program plan

• Materials to support at least one of the activities will be provided for each library. (1 per library in attendance)

At this workshop skills library staff can use in NASA @ My Library programs will be modeled. Materials will be provided for each participant to do the activities. This workshop provides an opportunity for the librarians to practice doing the activity, have conversation with the group to identify ways to expand or customize the activity to better fit individual needs, and will provide each library participating with a sample project for use in programming. Your instructor for this workshop is Laurie Bone, Senior Curator of Programs, Sloan Museum and Longway Planetarium.

This project is made possible by grant funds from the U.S. Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) administered by the State of Michigan through the Library of Michigan.

Lunch will be included.
